Sea Greens have superior nutritional content. I believe sea greens (otherwise known as
seaweed, sea vegetables and algae) are one of Gods greatest gifts to us. Grown by
Mother Ocean, the birthplace and primary nourisher of life on Earth, sea greens offer us
amazing health benefits. They are the densest plants on the planet. Ounce for ounce, along
with herbs, they are higher in vitamins and minerals than any other food. I eat delicious
organic sea greens every day. Sea greens are one of nature's richest sources of vegetable
protein; they provide full-spectrum concentrations of carotenes, chlorophyll, enzymes,
amino acids and fiber. The distinctive salty taste is not just salt, but a
balanced, chelated combination of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron
and trace minerals. They contain 10 to 20 times the minerals of land plants, and even
beyond their mineral quantities, their mineral balance is a natural stabilizer for
building sound nerve structure and good metabolism. Sea greens are rich in fiber and
packed with vitamins, with measurable amounts of vitamins K, A, D, B, E and C, and

caused by over-consumption of salty foods. Japanese studies from the 1960s show extracts
from sea greens control high blood pressure and atherosclerosis even in animals fed a high
cholesterol diet. The same studies found sea greens also lowered blood pressure in people!
Sea greens have antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal activity. Theyre
anti-inflammatory too, offering a one-two punch against many infections.
Immune-compromised diseases like chronic fatigue, HIV infection, arthritis and allergies
respond to sea plant treatment. Sea greens are at their best in just this type of role as

The chemical composition of sea greens is so close to human plasma, that perhaps the

including heavy metals (most dental fillings still contain them) and radiation
by-products, converting them into harmless salts that we can eliminate. The natural iodine
in sea greens can reduce by almost 80% the radioactive iodine-131 absorbed by the thyroid
and is a key to controlling and preventing gland disorders like breast and uterine
fibroids, prostate inflammation, adrenal exhaustion, and toxic liver and kidney states.
Preventive measures may be taken against iodine deficiency problems or disease risk by
adding just 2 tablespoons of chopped, dried sea greens to your daily diet. Studies from
the Harvard School of Public Health show that eating kelp as about 5% of your diet
inhibits cancer growth and even causes remission of active tumors. Sea greens contain
powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer properties, working to stop the proliferation of
cancer cells. Some experts consider them more potent than the drugs now used to treat
breast and prostate cancer, especially as interceptive measures. The latest research from
Japan reveals a seaweed extract from kombu, fucoidan, actually causes cancer cells to
self-destruct (a process technically referred to as cancer cell apoptosis). Stomach
cancer, colon cancer and leukemia all responded positively to fucoidan treatment in animal
tests and in vitro (test tube) studies. Sea greens have high magnesium, essential for the
absorption of calcium. Magnesium stimulates production of calcitonin, the hormone, which
increases calcium in the bones. Sea greens are a good source of natural vitamin D, too,
essential for calcium absorption, bone health and muscle function.

Allergies
Several Japanese studies into children's food allergies have found that blue-green algae
are a vital food source for infants who are allergic both to cow's milk and Soya-based
baby foods. Babies who were fed blue-green algae put on weight and became less susceptible
to other food allergies in later life. US researchers are currently exploring the benefits
of blue-green algae in people who are particularly sensitive to seasonal pollen allergies,
such as hay fever. Early results show that sensitivity to high pollen levels has decreased
among people who have taken blue-green algae supplements. Those practicing the Buteyko
Breathing Therapy also become desensitized
to
"allergies" experienced in their past.

Heavy metal
poisoning
After the war, Japan's rapid drive towards industrial supremacy resulted in several
environmental disasters involving heavy metals. Consequently, there have been many studies
in Japan into the effects of heavy metal pollution on health. Scientists have found that
blue-green algae is particularly effective in helping the body rapidly to eliminate
contaminants such as cadmium, lead strontium and mercury, with no adverse effects on
patients.

Improves cardiovascular diseases
Numerous studies have suggested that high dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids
(PUFAs) may help lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce risks for certain medical
conditions including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and mental illness. The
researchers point out that PUFAs comprise nearly 10% of the dry weight of blue-green algae
known as Spirulina, which grows naturally in North American lakes. To help determine the
algae's impact on cardiovascular health, the investigators fed laboratory rats either a
standard diet supplemented with 5% soybean oil (another source of PUFAs), or a
PUFA-deficient diet fortified with increasing amounts of dried blue green algae (up to
15%). They report that the algae "is a better source of PUFA than soybean oil and has
significant hypocholesterolemic (cholesterol-lowering) properties." According to
Kushak and colleagues, rats fed diets supplemented "with 10% and 15% algae decreased
(their blood) cholesterol level to 54% and those of rats fed the standard diet to 25%. The
algae may also be a highly efficient source of alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), a compound that
has been linked in earlier research to reduced risks for cancer and cardiovascular
disease. While both soybean oil and blue-green algae contain LNA, the authors note that
rats required triple the amount of soybean oil in their diets to achieve the same level of
circulating LNA of rats fed algae. According to the researchers, this finding suggests
that the LNA in algae may be more efficiently absorbed into the digestive system than the
LNA found in soybean oil. Overall, the study results suggest that the benefits of algae
supplementation exceed those of soybean oil, despite the fact that the oil contains
amounts of PUFA equal or greater to that found in algae.

Seaweed
against many diseases
Spirulina, Chlorella, and wild blue-green ( Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) contain more
chlorophyll than any other foods. Dried micro algae, are the richest source of
proteins, beta-carotene, and nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), and very rich source of GLA.
Micro algae have been successfully used to improve immunity of people with Cancer, AIDS,
Colitus and Diabetes etc. Micro Algae are single-celled organisms and simple multicellular
plants that live wherever there is water-in the sea, fresh water or moist soil. Spirulina
is a blue-green alga that's a rich source of proteins, carotenoids and other
micronutrients. Studies now support its antiviral and anticancer properties. Spirulina, a
single-celled alga, has the highest known levels of chlorophyll of any plant. GLA, an
essential fatty acid, is key to the body's ability to make vital prostaglandins,
substances that control body functions and help alleviate health problems such as
arthritis and heart disease, according to one preliminary report (Journal of Applied
Phycology, 1993, vol. 5). GLA supplementation results in blood's becoming more
"slippery" since prostaglandins reduce blood platelet adhesion so that
cholesterol deposits in arteries have less chance to build up and create arterial
blockage, according to Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James Balch, M.D., and
Phyllis Balch, C.N.C. (Avery). One study involving 30 male patients with mild hypertension
and high cholesterol showed a significant reduction of LDL (the "bad"
cholesterol) in the men who took the spirulina supplements for four weeks.

Sclerosis
Although there have been no scientific studies into the effects of blue-green algae on
arthritis specifically, there is much anecdotal evidence that it is especially beneficial
in treating degenerative diseases such as this. Scientists believe that one of the reasons
for the rise in cases of arthritis and other degenerative diseases is that our diets have
become extremely reliant on saturated fats which may prevent essential fatty acids from
working properly in our bodies. Gamma linoleic acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid,
which has an important role in many bodily functions, including the synthesis of
cholesterol, regulating blood pressure and managing inflammations. Clinical studies
have shown that GLA can help with symptoms of arthritis: blue-green algae has more
naturally occurring GLA than any other foodstuff on Earth with the exception of one -
human breast milk. Even Food And Drugs Administration of USA accepts it.

Seaweed as an Anti-inflammatory
Traditional uses of sea vegetables particularly in Asia have shown it to provide some
therapeutic effect on the inflammatory response, particularly in tissue wounds. Ryan Drum,
Ph.D., herbalist and seaweed specialist, asserts that fucoidan is the bio-active element
in brown seaweed responsible for lessening the inflammatory response. Fucoidan is a
water-soluble compound that can be easily extracted by boiling/simmering a quart of water
with an ounce (about 1 ½ cups) of dried brown sea vegetable for 20 to 40 minutes. Either
pre-surgically or after tissue wounding has occurred Dr. Ryan recommends drinking this
fucoidan extract daily for 1 to 2 weeks.

Sea Vegetables and Hypertension
Back in the late 60's in England Dr. Eric Powell, Ph.D., N.D., successfully treated
patients suffering from hypertension with seaweed which he called kelp. He writes in his
book Kelp, the Health Giver (distributed by NutriBooks). "Kelp has a normalizing
action on the thyroid and parathyroi. Debra Ahern, Ph.D., R.N., reporting her findings in
the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (Vol.89, No.7). It is well known to
dietitians that people with low blood potassium levels are more prone to hypertension. Dr.
Ahern maintained that seaweed-based seasonings provide not only high concentrations of
potassium but also chloride, a means of retaining this potassium. In her study she says,
"Chloride may play an indirect positive role in hypertension by allowing renal
retention of potassium. If this is the case, potassium sources that provide chloride may
be more effective in raising blood plasma levels than fruits and vegetables. The high
chloride content of those seasonings with seaweed may make them good sources of potassium
of clients at risk of hypokalemia (too little potassium)." And finally, an article,
"Blood Pressure and Nutrient Intake," from U.S. Science magazine states that
higher intakes of calcium, potassium, and sodium in seaweed are associated with lower mean
systolic pressure and lower absolute risk of hypertension."

Algae good for immune system, weight loss and low cholesterol
Adding
spirulina to cultured immune system cells significantly increases the production of
infection fighting cytokines, say immunologists at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical
Center. Their finding is published in the Fall issue of the Journal of Medicinal Foods.
A number of animal studies have shown spirulina to be an effective immunomodulator (an
agent that can effect the behavior of immune cells.) Spirulina increase antibody responses
and the activity of natural killer cells, which destroy infected and cancerous cells in
the body. While extensive human studies have not been done, several reports also suggest
spirulina has therapeutic effects on hyperlipidemia and obesity. In one study, spirulina
decreased total serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while
increasing high-density lipoprotein. A 1986 study of obese patients showed a significant
reduction of body weight after including spirulina in the diet for four weeks. In the UC
Davis study, researchers evaluated the secretion of the cytokines interferon-gamma,
interleukin-4, and interleukin-1beta in the lab to get a better understanding of
spirulina's potential regulatory effect on the immune system. In the body, the
preferential increase in the production of interferon-gamma over interleukin-4 would shift
the immune system towards mounting a cell-mediated immune response instead of a humoral
response. A cell-mediated response includes the activation of T-cells and antibodies that
work with macrophages, another type of immune system cell, to engulf invading
micro-organisms. Hence, spirulina's strength in protecting against intracellular pathogens
and parasites. The moderate increase in the secretion of interleukin-1beta, a cytokine
that acts on nearly every cell of the body to promote inflammation, works to support the
overall immune response. To evaluate the effects of spirulina on the immune system, the UC
Davis immunologists collected blood samples from 12 healthy volunteers, separating out the
peripheral blood mononuclear cells. These cells, which include macrophages, monocytes, and
lymphocytes, including B and T cells, work as a team to mount an immune response. The
researchers incubated these cell cultures with dilutions of spirulina made from 429 mg
capsules of dried, powdered spirulina. They added phytohemoglutanin, a known stimulator of
lymphoid cells, to half of cell cultures to assess spirulina's effect on the immune system
at rest and when stimulated to mount an allergic response. After 72 hours, they measured
changes in cytokine levels in all samples using ELISA analysis. (ELISA, or enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay, is a sensitive technique for accurately determining the amount of
protein in a given sample.)

Attention
Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Seaweed can be used in place of drugs to help children with attention deficit disorder
(ADD), says an American author. Karl J. Abrams, a Californian chemistry professor, is
giving a lecture in Edmonton next week on nutritional alternatives to Ritalin, one of the
drugs most commonly prescribed for ADD sufferers. Ritalin is just a quick fix which masks
the symptoms, said Abrams, author of the book Attention Deficit Disorder: A Nutritional
Approach. It's estimated that more than one million Canadians have ADD, characterized by
poor attention skills, impulsive behavior and hyperactivity. It is thought to be a hereditary
illness. Health Canada reports that consumption of Ritalin has increased fivefold since
1990, a fact that has doctors and health authorities worried. Teachers like Ritalin
because it makes the kids sit there nice and quiet - like zombies. But it isn't a
cure," said Abrams. He claims the answer lies in algae. It is freeze-dried and turned
into capsules.The algae, he says, contains minerals and amino acids that give long-term
improvement to the brain's function.

the cure for many disease
Algae also have many medical benefits. Many types of algae possibly have anticancer,
anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. Also alga appears to prevent and
or treat chronic fatigue, colds, arthritis, and chronic allergies. According to Wendy
Priesnitz, "A 1997 study, reported a newly discovered protein that inactivates HIV,
which was isolated from cultures of blue green algae". Other studies have shown that
Spirulina inhibits the growth of tumors and helps destroy those that are already present.
Certain types of algae are also highly nutritious. Two types of algae,
Spirulina and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), are used as dietary supplements.
Spirulina contains vitamin E that boosts the immune system. AFA contains neuropeptides and
neurotransmitter precursors that improve brain function. Most types of algae contain
protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E, B complex, and B12, calcium, iodine, potassium, and
iron. Since algae are highly nutritious, the United Nations have informed under developed
countries about the benefits of algae. Perhaps humans should
further research algae. Since algae have
probably been on this earth the longest, it has experienced more and may know more than
any other living organism. Algae have endured severe radiation from the sun and it has
survived drastic changes in the earth's climate. Perhaps humans can learn how algae have
evolved and use the information to better adapt to our environment.

us through stressful situations by supplying not only magnesium, but also pantothenic acid
and riboflavin, two B-vitamins necessary for energy production. Pantothenic acid is
especially important for the health of the adrenal glands. The adrenals control many body
functions and play a critical role in resistance to stress. When supplies of necessary
nutrients like pantothenic acids are inadequate, stressful times can exhaust the adrenal
glands resulting in chronic fatigue, reduced resistance to allergies and infection, and a
feeling of being overwhelmed or overly anxious.

Anaemia
Many women suffer
iron deficiencies (especially those drinking lots of coffee) or anaemia for a large part
of their lives, particularly during their reproductive years. Women need to be more
careful than men in monitoring their iron levels, because they generally do not eat as
much meat as men and also lose iron when they menstruate each month. Iron is the single
most common mineral deficiency in the world and affects children, women, older
people and dieters. It is absolutely vital for a healthy immune system. In clinical tests,
blue-green alga has increased the volume of red blood cells in the body, and their
capacity to carry oxygen, in thirty days. Scientists think it is the high levels of
iron, chlorophyll, vitamin B12, folic acid and protein, which are behind blue-green
algae's efficacy in treating anaemia. Blue-green alga is also particularly beneficial in
treating long-term anaemia with underlying malnutrition and rapid blood-loss
anaemia. In another study, rats that were fed spirulina were found to absorb 60% more
iron than those fed iron sulphate supplements, suggesting that iron in blue-green algae is
more easily assimilated than iron from other sources. It is due to the necessary amino
acid found in Spirulina, which aids absorption. A Japanese study of eight young
women whose blood hemoglobin had been affected by long-term dieting were cured of anaemia
in 30 days, after taking 4 grams of spirulina after each meal. In another Japanese study,
the red blood count of anaemic animals returned to normal within four-and-a-half days of
administering algae. Some researchers believe that blue-green alga is so effective in
treating anaemia because of its high chlorophyll content (often called 'plant blood').
They think that the body manages to convert chlorophyll into hemoglobin, by displacing
chlorophyll's magnesium nucleus with an iron nucleus.

Various
positive effects of algae
Spirulina that distinguishes itself from other forms of Blue-Green Algae. First, it is the
richest known source of chlorophyl. Second, it grows wild amidst an abundance of mineral
bed nutrients unlike any other ecosystem currently known. Third, it possess a starch cell
wall making all internal nutrients readily available when ingested. Fourth, freeze dries,
resulting in the highest retained value of these nutrients all in their original, raw, and
colloidal forms. And fifth, this concentrates these nutrients into the richest source of
RNA, protein, vitamins including beta carotene, essential fatty acids associated food

which is accomplished largely due to the active RNA content of the cells, as well as the
biosynthesis (production) of RNA ITSELF, is up to five times as great in young vs. older
animals. The significance of this is that in chronic infections, RNA supplementation
apparently can induce a needed increase of white blood cells, leukocytosis, to deal with

Effect on animals immune system
Several initial research projects conducted by Texas Tech, in conjunction with Mississippi
State University and Virginia Tech, show that cattle that grazed forage treated with
seaweed extract, or directly-fed seaweed meal and extract to cattle and swine, has marked
positive effects on animals immune function. We found that by applying a specific
seaweed, Ascophyllum Nodosum, in an extract to the animals that their immune system, or
their ability to fight diseases, was enhanced said Pond.

Alginic acid, which passes through the body undigested attracts and binds heavy metals

Anti-inflammatory
properties
Further tests at the Norwegian University of Technology in Trondheim have shown the
polymannuronic acid present in Ascophyllum Nodosum, to work against certain bacterial
infections and several research programmes are examining the potentially anti-inflammatory
substances in brown seaweed.

aids the production of a special type of white blood cells known as monocytes to produce

Seaweed
against Goitre
There are many references in the professional literature to the historical uses of seaweed
in medicine. The 16th century Chinese herbal, Pen Tsae Kan Mu lists those recommended, as
a cure for goitre and it may not be coincidence that in neighbouring Japan, where the
incidence of goitre is low, cause the consumption of seaweed is among the highest in the
world.

The effect of Ascophyllum Nodosum on serum lipids was studied in 30 healthy male
volunteers who had mild hyperlipidemia or mild hypertension. Total serum cholesterol was
reduced significantly by giving the brown seaweed and when medication was discontinued, it
returned to baseline. Ascophyllum Nodosum has been proven through this experiment to have
serum cholesterol reduction effect.

An analysis was carried out to test the anti-coagulant and anti-thrombotic activities from
Ascophyllum Nodosum. The bleeding time was slightly increased and brown seaweed shows
promise as an anti-thrombotic drug.

Two groups of bodybuilders were tested, one group eating ordinary food and the other
ordinary food plus seaweed extract from Ascophyllum Nodosum. The group eating seaweed
showed a 10% larger muscular growth than the group not taking seaweed extract.

Another professor and marine biologist at the same university, Torgny von Wachenfeldt
establish the fact that algae reduces the risk of the common cold, thrombosis,

lower your blood pressure
Doctor Marcin Krotkiewski at the Sahlgrenska hospital in Gothenburg carried out a test of
62 patients and indicated that the majority of the group had lowered their blood pressure.

Seaweed expel heavy metals
Phil. Dr. Göran Michanek performed a research concerning heavy metals and radioactive
substances. He found that brown seaweed Ascophyllum Nodosum could expel heavy metals such
as quicksilver, cadmium, led, arsenic and strontium 90 in the whole body but first in the
stomach and the bowels.

Algae
rich in vitamin B12, excellent food for vegetarians and vegans.
Chemist Bengt-Göran Österdahl at the national food administration analyzed algae for
vitamin B12 using a radiometric assay. All samples of algae contained vitamin B12.
The highest levels were found in the algae Spirulina and Ascophyllum that both are
included in Algine Plus.

Algae for Heart Diseases
Kelp (Ascophyllum Nodosum) is an edible seaweed and an excellent source of Iodine. It also
contains Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Often used as a
substitute for salt, kelp is widely used in Japan for its health giving properties. Kelp
consumption can be good for the heart. Kelp has cardiotonic action as well as a
hypotensive property. Consumption is also correlated with lower rates of heart disease.
Several components of kelp, including laminine, are responsible for this effect.

Researchers in the mid seventies and early eighties were exploring rare algae that

Some sea vegetables have been shown to be unique sources of
carbohydrate-like substances called fucans that can reduce the body's inflammatory
response. Plus, as noted above, seaweed are a very good source of magnesium, the

clinical reports made by Prof. Chu Nai Tan Mi of Japan Sake Cyoku Medical University
proved that Spirulina is dramatically effective in the restoration of a healthy condition
with diabetics. There was a case of a 55-year old male with diabetes, height 168 cm,
weight 70 kg who already had diabetic complications, i.e., mild cataracts in both eyes. He
took 7 tablets of Spirulina at each meal, three times a day. The impact is clearly shown:
over a period of 60 days, the diabetic patients' blood sugar levels had returned to the
normal levels as experienced by a non-diabetic. This patient is one of several who were
cured. He was completely normal after taking Spirulina for two months, and his
cataracts got better. It is necessary for patients with more sever cases to take
Spirulina for 3 - 6 months. Japanese
clinical trials have shown that when diabetic patients were given twenty-one tablets of
spirulina each day, their diabetes improved within weeks and they experienced significant
weight loss. The scientists also reported that patient's overall stamina, energy and wellbeing were improved when
they took blue-green algae. Researchers think that blue-green algae is effective in
treating diabetes because it
contains polysaccharide sugars which are very readily assimilated by the body and maintain a steady blood sugar level. Another advantage was that blue-green
algae helped to curb food cravings because the nutrients it supplies are so comprehensive
that it satisfies the body. Weight loss and reduced sugar craving meant that patients
did not need as much insulin.

According to Japanese ophthalmic surgeons,
around 90% of cataracts in elderly people improved when the patients were treated with a
combined program of blue-green algae and drugs. Blue-green algae, as we have seen,
contains high levels of beta-carotene. Recent studies in the US have shown that when high
doses of beta carotene are given to people who are extremely light-sensitive (a condition
known as erythropoietic protoporphyria or EPP), more than three-quarters of them said they
could tolerate light much more easily, some claimed that they could spend four times
longer than normal in the sun. This breakthrough was especially important for children who
are affected by the disease, as it means they can play outside in the light without
becoming sick.

Chlorophyll is one of the most powerful detoxificants of a human body, it is a savage
killer of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract and eliminator of body odours - most
plants eating animals have a very pleasant body and breath smell because of chlorophyll in
the plants they eat. It is excellent calcium controller, thus preventing a host of
calcium deficiency illnesses. Spirulina is the second richest source of chlorophyll
(after Chlorella) and far ahead of alfalfa. In 1941, an American dentist, S. L.
Goldberg, successfully treated 300 patients suffering from pyorrhoea (bleeding gums and
loosening teeth) with liquid chlorophyll. He discovered that those who were also suffering
from Vincent's disease, a gum infection, which is caused by lack of B-complex vitamins and
exacerbated by stress, also improved significantly. He encouraged his patients to squirt
liquid chlorophyll between their teeth at least four times a day and to rinse their mouths
with a chlorophyll-based mouthwash. His patients' teeth tightened in the gums, the
bleeding stopped and new tissue grew over the gums to replace damaged tissue. Chlorophyll
was used extensively on the battlefields of both World Wars as an emergency procedure to
disinfect wounds, prevent infection and promote healing in damaged tissue. Spirulina has
extremely high chlorophyll content - in fact, it is entirely responsible for its green
pigment (phycocyanin is the blue pigment). Taking Spirulina will
thus ensure rapid healing of damaged tissue, as well as providing a concentrated source of
calcium, necessary to maintain the health of teeth and gums.

The immune system is our first line of defense against disease, whether infectious or
degenerative. Its role is to stop trouble in the body before it starts, for example

Research in China has focused on the pigment phycocyanin in blue-green algae.
Phycocyanin appears to affect the stem cells found in bone marrow, which are vitally

Prevention of Birth Defects and Cardiovascular Disease
The folic acid so abundant
in sea vegetables plays a number of other very important protective roles. Studies have
demonstrated that adequate levels of folic acid in the diet are needed to prevent certain
birth defects, including spina bifida. Folic acid is also needed to break down an
intermediate dangerous chemical produced during the methylation cycle called homocysteine.
(Methylation is one of the most important cellular cycles through which a wide variety of
important chemicals are produced.) Homocysteine can directly damage blood vessel walls,
and high levels of this chemical are associated with a significantly increased risk of
cardiovascular disease and stroke. Flavoring soups and stews with seaweed or using seaweed
in salads is a smart strategy, especially for those dealing with atherosclerosis or
diabetic heart disease.

Drum, Ph.D., herbalist and seaweed specialist, indicates several elements in sea veggies
that make plausible their traditional use as antivirals. Fucoidan, a water soluble
compound found in the brown algae, has been shown to interfere with every stage of viral
attack: cell attachment, cell penetration, and viral intracellular penetration. He also
notes that certain polysaccharides or glycoproteins from red seaweed (dulse) have been
successfully used in treating genital herpes and Herpes Zosters. He also notes in the
seaweed literature that carrageenan derivatives have expressed strong antiviral activity.

Seaweed can repair DNA
The influence of water-soluble polysaccharide from spirulina platensis on excision repair
of DNA was investigated by means of endonuclease assay and radioautography. The results
showed that the presence of the polysaccharide enhanced significantly both the repair
activity of radiation damaged DNA excision and the unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS). During
the examination of the time course of the excision process, it was found that the presence
of polysaccharide of spirulina not only increased the initial rates of the damaged DNA
excision and the UDS, but also postponed the saturations of both important reactions of
excision and repair DNA synthesis.

Seaweed
lower cholesterol
Thirty healthy men with high cholesterol, mild hypertension and hyperlipidemia showed
lower serum cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL (undesirable fat) levels after eating
spirulina for eight weeks. These men did not change their diet, except adding spirulina.
No adverse effects were noted. Group A consumed 4.2 grams daily for eight weeks. Total
serum cholesterol dropped a significant 4.5% within 4 weeks from 244 to 233. Group B
consumed spirulina for four weeks, then stopped. Serum cholesterol levels decreased, then
returned to the initial level. Researchers concluded spirulina did lower serum cholesterol
and was likely to have a favorable effect on alleviating heart disease since the
arterioscelosis index improved.

Algae fight bacteria
A study carried out by scientists in Australia has found that chemicals in marine algae
can fight the bacteria that cause many of the infections associated with surgery,
including the super bug MRSA. Some of these infections are caused by bacteria, which
normally lives harmlessly on skin, attaching themselves to implants during operations.
People who have surgery have in effect a wound opened up and that does give bacteria the
opportunity to gain a foothold. These bacteria can often bond together inside the body and
cause infection. Neither the body's immune system nor antibiotics can kill them. In many
cases, patients have to undergo surgery again to rectify the problem. However, scientists
at the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology in Sydney say their
discovery could provide a solution. Jasjit Baveja and colleagues have found that chemicals
called furanones reduced the numbers of a bacterium called Staphylococcus epidermidis
coating plastic plates by 90% in laboratory experiments. The agents were also found to
inhibit the growth of bugs such as Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, which grows on metal
implants and is often resistant to antibiotics. Furanones have previously been identified
as the agents that keep a red alga free of bacteria and other marine organisms. The
researchers tested their findings in sheep. They found that catheters, which had been
coated with furanone had 85% less bacteria after 12 weeks than would normally be expected.
Those catheters that had not been coated with the agent were covered in bacteria. The
chemical does not kill the bacteria but instead prevents them from coming together, which in turn prevents infection.

Cholera treatment, antibiotic medicine
Seaweeed could yield a new treatment for cholera and perhaps a whole new type of
antibiotic medicine, scientists said yesterday. Researchers have found that compounds
known as furanones isolated from the some seaweed can prevent the bacteria that cause
cholera from switching on their disease-causing mechanisms. Furanones do not kill such
microbes but simply "jam" their ability to send signals to each other, the
scientists report. This is very exciting as these are the first antimicrobials of their
type that have been shown to be effective, said Diane McDougald at the University of New
South Wales. The fact that furanones prevent bacterial communication means that they may
be effective against a wide range of bacteria that have communication systems, such as the
bacteria that cause golden Staph infections and tuberculosis, she says. That would be
useful because many bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics. They do so, scientists
believe, through natural selection those that survive an antibacterial onslaught create
progeny that are resistant. Because furanones don't kill the bacteria, there is no
selection pressure for them to develop resistance, McDougald said. Indeed, in a million
years of evolution, no natural resistance has been developed by bacteria to these furanones in the natural environment. The
discovery has only involved laboratory tests.

healing of wounds and inhibit the growth of some tumors. Spirulina's cell wall is also a

"One unexpected effect was a noticeable improvement in the condition of their skin
and hair". Some scientists think Spirulina may help to prevent degenerative disease
and even slow down the aging process, while American researcher Dr. David Steenblock
believes it has great potential in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, Epsteir Barr disease and
other equally chronic viral illnesses. Chlorophyll, which you can take in supplements
derived from green micro-algae and wheat grass, may also help detoxify the body.
"Because it absorbs and inactivates toxic materials, people have traditionally taken
spirulina for their high chlorophyll content," says Ron Klatz, D.O., president of the
American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in Colorado Springs. The Spirulina alga has become
popular because it's high in chlorophyll and because of its nucleic acids, which may
strengthen immunity. This research seems at best preliminary, but it's reinforced by
another Japanese study done with AIDS-infected mice that showed some increase in immune
function when the mice were fed Spirulina (International Journal on Immunopharmacology,

Sea Vegetables and Radioactive/Heavy Metal Detoxification
Sea vegetables' effectiveness in treating radiation and heavy metal poisoning is well
documented and well known worldwide. The first studies on fighting radiation poisoning
with seaweed were started 30 years ago at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Researchers found that alginic acid, one of the important intercellular polysaccharides
found in large brown algae like Kelp and Alaria, could reduce the amount of strontium 90
absorbed through the intestinal wall. (S.C. Skoryna et al, "Intestinal Absorption of
Radioactive Strontium," Canadian Medical Association Journal 191, 1964) Even the U.S.
government has done research on the detoxifying qualities of alginates from Kelp. The
EPA's Environmental Toxicology Lab found that alginates could bind and eliminate both
radionucleides such as Strontium 90 and heavy metals such as cadmium. They also discovered
that Strontium already stored in the bones was re-secreted and bound by the alginates and
safely passed through the intestines. Thus the remarkable kelps can help alleviate past as
well as present toxic contamination.

Spirulina Phycocyanin Builds Blood
Polypeptide called Phycocyanin. Studies show that Phycocyanin affects the stem cells found
in bone marrow. Stem cells are "Grandmother" to both the white blood cells that
make up the cellular immune system and red blood cells that oxygenate the body. Chinese
scientists document Phycocyanin stimulating hematopoiesis, (the creation of blood),
emulating the affect of the hormone erythropoetin, (EPO). EPO is produced by healthy
kidneys and regulates bone marrow stem cell production of red blood cells. Chinese
scientists claim Phycocyanin also regulates production of white blood cells, even when
bone marrow stem cells are damaged by toxic chemicals or radiation. Based on this effect,
Spirulina is approved in Russia as a "medicine food" for treating radiation
sickness. The Children of Chernobyl suffer radiation poisoning from eating food grown on
radioactive soil. Their bone marrow is damaged, rendering them immunodeficient. Radiation
damaged bone marrow cannot produce normal red or white blood cells. The children are
anemic and suffer from terrible allergic reactions. Children fed just five grams of
Spirulina in tablets each day make dramatic recoveries within six weeks. Children not
given Spirulina remain ill.

Algae prevent fatty liver /
arterioscleroses
Rats fed basal diets containing 1% cholesterol showed elevated total
cholesterol, and phospholipids in serum. This was clearly reduced by rats fed basal diets
containing 16% spirulina and 1% cholesterol.The results indicated spirulina might prevent
dietary hypercholesterolemia and arteriosclerosis. Fatty liver caused by high fat and
high-cholesterol diets was also reduced rapidly by feeding spirulinn.

Algae prevents Arsenic poisoning
Spirulina, a green-blue algae developed by Bangladeshi and French scientists several years
ago, has been found to have "very good effects" on people suffering from arsenic
poisoning caused by the recently-discovered contamination of much of the groundwater in
Bangladesh. Up to this point, doctors in Bangladesh have been virtually helpless in
treating dying arsenic patients. Bangladeshi researchers conducted a three-month
hospital-based study in which 33 patients were given spirulina and 17 were given placebo
doses. 82% of those taking Spirulina showed tremendous improvement. Bangladeshi
authorities say that approximately 70 million people, out of a population of 120 million,
are at "great risk" from arsenic poisoning and a search for alternative water
sources is under way. Arsenic was found in tube-wells in 59 of 64 districts. The campaign
was so successful that now approximately 97 percent of the population has access to
tube-well water. Leading dermatologists, who joined a major health conference in Dhaka
this week, unanimously recommended Spirulina to treat arsenic patients. The cause of the
arsenic contamination is currently unknown.

Seaweed expel toxins
The chemical pollution in air, soil and water is particularly serious, since the
pollutants find their way into the food chain and their absorption into the body can be
hazardous. Our investigation has shown that alginate can bind radioactive strontium,
excess barium, cadmium and led. There is no family of foods more protective against
radiation and environmental pollutants than sea vegetables. Sea vegetables can prevent
assimilation of different radionuclitides, heavy metals such as cadmium, and other
environmental toxins. An experiment conducted by J.F. Stara at the Environmental
Protection Agency showed that sodium alginate significantly reduced the amount of
radioactive strontium in the bones of cats. Stara observed that radioactive strontium in
the bones is resecreted into the intestines where it is bound by alginate, neutralized
then excreted in the stools.

Help to control Chrohn's disease
A study from Spain shows that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids can help control Crohn's
disease. Crohn's disease occurs when person has bloody diarrhea and cramping, and doctors
cannot find cancer or an obvious infection as the cause. Omega-3s fatty acids form
prostaglandins that help to reduce swelling, redness, and pain. Crohn's disease is thought
to be cause by a person's own immunity punching holes in the intestines or a hidden
infection, possibly with a bacteria called mycobacteria avium paratuberculosis. The
recommended omega-3s are found in fish, shellfish, seaweed and seeds such as whole grains,
beans and nuts.

Algae - Superfood for many diseases
Sodium alginate may have some usefulness as a lipid-lowering agent, but the evidence for
this possible indication is preliminary. Similarly, there is preliminary evidence that it
may be of benefit in diabetes. It has demonstrated detoxifying effects and may be helpful
in some with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Seaweed rich in iodine, is used in many
parts of the world to prevent and treat goiter. Carrageenans found in some red seaweed
have demonstrated some anti-viral activity. Seaweed is used by some for regulating bowels.
Calcium alginate has been used for wound healing, and sodium alginate has been effective
in treating ouch-ouch disease. Some other polysaccharide components of seaweed have
exhibited immunomodulating and anticarcinogenic effects in the laboratory. Folk remedy
uses of seaweed products have included fever, eczema, gallstone and liver disease, gout,
menstrual problems, hypertension, kidney disease and scabies. There are some preliminary
animal studies in which sodium alginate and agar have been shown to reduce cholesterol
levels. In one of these studies, sodium alginate enhanced cholesterol excretion into
feces. It also inhibited blood glucose and insulin levels from rising 30 minutes after
glucose administration. In another animal study, both algin and agar had favorable
cholesterol effects but did not affect triglycerides. There are also preliminary reports
that carrageenans derived from red seaweed have some
experimental cholesterol-lowering properties. Alginates have been used for heartburn and
acid reflux for decades. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that
alginate-based rafts effectively provide physical barriers to acidic gastric contents and
can thus significantly reduce reflux episodes. Alginates are present in some
over-the-counter antacids. Calcium alginate is often used as a dressing for exudative
wounds. It is an effective absorbable hemostatic and is often used to pack sinuses,
bleeding wounds of various types and burns. Sodium alginate is also used for this purpose.
In one study, the use of calcium alginate hemostatic swabs was credited with significantly
reducing blood loss in various surgeries and with significantly reducing duration of
operations. Calcium alginate was shown to be four times as absorbent per unit weight as
gauze. The alginates have been shown to bind tightly to strontium, barium, cadmium and
radium so that these toxins pass out of the body with little or no absorption. It also
binds with lead, but not as completely. Ouch-ouch disease, characterized by painful joints
and believed to be caused by oral cadmium exposure, has been successfully treated with
alginates in Japan. Reduction in the absorption of strontium has been noted in children
given an alginate derivative. Retention of radioactive barium has been reduced in rats fed
sodium alginate derivatives. In one human trial, 10 grams of sodium alginate ameliorated
acute radiation effects due to exposure to radiation doses of 50 to 3,000 rads. Calcium
alginate has shown anti-viral activity in some in vitro and animal studies. It is
sufficiently effective that diagnostic laboratories caution against the use of calcium
alginate swabs in some diagnostic sampling, owing to calcium alginate's toxicity to herpes
viruses and chlamydia, among other infective agents. The carrageenans, sulfated
polysaccharides derived from red seaweed, have inhibited both HSV1 and HSV2 in vitro.
They also inhibit some other viruses, including HIV. In one animal study, preparations
from various edible seaweed significantly reduced the incidence
of chemically induced cancers, compared with controls that were unsupplemented with these
preparations. In another animal study, an extract from brown algae recently showed
immuno-enhancing activity. The polysaccharide fraction of the extract, more than the
nonpolysaccharide fraction, had immuno-enhancing effects on the proliferative response of
spleen cells. This response was associated with B-cell, but not T-cell, populations.

Relief
for Menopausal Symptoms
Seaweed supply of
relaxing magnesium may also help restore normal sleep patterns in women who are
experiencing symptoms of menopause. And the lignans in sea vegetables can act as very weak
versions of estrogen, one of the hormones whose levels decrease during the menopausal
period. For women suffering from symptoms such as hot flashes, seaweeds' lignans may be
just strong enough to ease their discomfort.
